Carnival of Cultures

Berlin's Carnival of Cultures celebrates the city's ethnic diversity every May, as Germany's capital is home to more than 400,000 immigrants from 180 countries. A relatively new festival that has grown remarkably since it was first held in 1996, the carnival is now one of Germany's most-visited events. (Almost two million people attended the carnival in 2004.) Featuring an elaborate parade and street festival, the carnival also spotlights new trends and styles in Germany's youth and minority cultures. The Carnival of Cultures provides members of Berlin's ethnic communities with a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of their cultural heritage.
